50 Years 50 Faces

Gunthard Schröder

Employee in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in the process engineering measurement laboratory, member and former chair of the local staff council for the Schweinfurt site

At FHWS since September 1992

For me, FHWS is …
a workplace in which the activities and tasks are very varied, it is never boring and where I am delighted to work.

What do you appreciate about FHWS?

  • For Schweinfurt, the short distances and the camaraderie among the colleagues in all faculties and in administration we all help each other to solve problems.
  • In my many years of service on the staff council, the collaboration with the university management and all colleagues, which is always good.

What was the best decision in your professional career and why? What has changed since then?

There are two decisions for me:

  1. The decision to leave my familiar surrounding after my training in order to take my first skilled job in another city. It gave me a new perspective and encouraged independence because I now had to do everything for myself.
  2. The decision, in 1992, to move to what was then the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Business and Engineering (FMI) at FHWS, which later evolved into two separate faculties for Mechanical Engineering (FM) and Business and Engineering (FWI).

What do you think has shaped FHWS the most over the last 50 years?

  • The constant growth of FHWS in terms of staff and students, the further development of the faculties, administration and degree programmes, etc.
  • The constant expansion of FHWS with new buildings and the renovation of older buildings to create a modern FHWS.
  • When I first started working here, FHWS’ good reputation in the region and now also worldwide thanks to internationalisation. "FHWS brings the region to the world."

What is your vision of the future for FHWS? What might FHWS look like in 50 years’ time?

For FHWS to still be an attractive employer in the region in 50 years. Due to digitalisation, FHWS will probably change as an employer and study location in ways that none of us can imagine. The existing degree programmes will change and develop, and new degree programmes will be added, as currently in Schweinfurt with Robotics and Hydrogen Technology.

What is your insider tip for the cities of Würzburg or Schweinfurt and why?

The old cemetery in Schweinfurt as an oasis of calm in the middle of the city and a visit to the Mole 9 beer garden on the Gutermann Promenade in the summer.
