50 Years 50 Faces

Dr. iur. utr. Jürgen Herzog

Former Chancellor of FHWS

At FHWS from 1 July 1973 until 30 April 2007

For me, FHWS is ...
a place of good memories, an important part of my life.

What do you appreciate about FHWS?

The quick reactions to practical requirements. The constant consideration of the graduates’ job opportunities. The combination of meeting both international requirements and demands of a regionally rooted higher education institution.

What was the best decision in your professional career and why? What has changed since then?

In 1973, I left my office in the Internal Administration of the Free State of Bavaria for the office of chancellor of FHWS. The following aspects were challenging for me from 1973: The continuing expansion and development of FHWS, the administrative support with the founding of new degree programmes and the development of existing ones, anchorage of FHWS within the Main-Franconian economy, development of international relations in the 1980s, especially important was the support for higher education institutions in the New Länder from late 1989, in the early 1990s the founding of the Aschaffenburg department (of which Fachhochschule/TH Aschaffenburg developed in 1995), commitment to foster the “Europeanisation” of higher education institutions in Hungary, Poland and Romania as well as in Eastern Ukraine. One aspect has not changed since I my time with FHWS: Constant development to meet the requirements of the times.

What do you think has shaped FHWS the most over the last 50 years?

The close cooperation with the industry, the high motivation of lecturers and students, the fact that employees identify with FHWS, funding by the State and the industries, the appointments of successful leaders, namely Presidents Professor Rudolf Müller, Professor Dr. Wolfgang Fechner, Professor Dr. Heribert Weber and Professor Dr. Robert Grebner.

What is your vision of the future for FHWS? What might FHWS look like in 50 years’ time?

I do not need to be a prophet to answer this question. If FHWS stays true to its current values it will still be at the front line in 50 years’ time.

What is your insider tip for the cities of Würzburg or Schweinfurt and why?

The beautiful Main-Franconian landscape with its rich artistic treasures and culinary offers (for post-Covid times).
