PhD researcher Amparo Zamora Mogollo joins CAIRO.thws to bring AI into knee surgery planning

We're super happy to welcome Amparo Zamora Mogollo, PhD student at the Clinimetría Group, Department of Physiotherapy, Universidad de Málaga, to CAIRO.thws for a research stay within the Uninovis network.

Over three months in total, Amparo will work alongside our Probabilistic Deep Learning Group, led by Prof. Dr. Magda Gregorová, bringing her clinical and biomechanical expertise into a genuinely interdisciplinary collaboration between medicine and machine learning.

The challenge she's tackling
Medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) is a joint-preserving surgery for patients with early-stage knee osteoarthritis.

Planning the procedure currently relies on manually identifying and measuring the optimal cutting position from CT scans, then comparing pre- and post-operative images to check the correction. It's precise work, but it takes time. Amparo and the PDLG team are now exploring together how to automate two of these steps: measuring the cut itself and comparing the before and after scans, so that surgical planning becomes faster and more consistent.

Amparo will be with us for 1.5 months now, and she'll come back for a second stay of 1.5 months in March 2027.

We'll keep you posted on how the project is going. :-)

About Uninovis
Uninovis is the European University Alliance for Data Sciences, bringing together eight universities across Europe, including THWS and Universidad de Málaga, under the banner "Data for L.I.F.E." One of the alliance's goals is exactly this kind of exchange: researchers moving between partner institutions to work together across disciplines and borders, on the way toward becoming a fully connected European University by 2027.
