History of the IEHT

The institute’s founding goes back to many years of research achievements in energy and high-voltage technology. Today, many projects with leading companies in the fields of electrical power engineering, materials, components, devices, installations, systems, services, and energy supply are being carried out. Reference projects deal, for example, with energy transport for desert power, power cable systems, HVDC insulation materials, thermographic analyses, insulation systems for transformers, ageing of insulation systems, diagnostic procedures for high-voltage equipment and multi-physical simulations. In addition, the IEHT was entrusted by the federal government with the management of the joint project TransHK to increase the transport capability of high-voltage components within the framework of the research initiative "Sustainable electricity grids". DFG-funded basic research in the field of electrical insulation systems is now also part of the IEHT's repertoire.

On 1 October 2019, the founder of the Institute for Energy and High Voltage Technology, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Küchler, retired and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus H. Zink took over as director of the institute. Prof. Zink himself studied electrical engineering and information technology at THWS and was also able to carry out his research work as part of his doctoral project at the IEHT and in the high-voltage laboratory under the guidance of Prof. Küchler.
