New all-time high score for our Indoor Localization Team!
While the online track (Track 3) didn’t bring the hoped-for result, the team truly delivered in their flagship discipline: the smartphone-based onsite Track 1 in Rome. Max Werner, Sebastian Baader, Leander Knüttel, and Frank Deinzer not only won, they also achieved an accuracy of 2.0 m in the 75th percentile. A score never reached before in the history of Track 1!
How does their system work?
Without relying on GPS at all, it estimates a person's location inside a building over time. To do this, it combines geometric information from the floor plan, the smartphone's motion sensors (IMU) and Wi-Fi signal strength measurements.
And how does the competition work?
Each team received a floor plan of the venue a few days in advance. On the day before the evaluation, they were allowed to visit the venue in person to calibrate and fine-tune their systems. On the first day of the conference, it got serious: in two trials per team, an independent actor carried the smartphone along a path that was kept secret from the competitors. This year, the route led right through a crowded auditorium and the poster session.
Congratulations to the whole team on this outstanding result!
And a big thank you to the competition track chairs
