Imag(e)ining Futures: THWS Faculty of Design hosts an international symposium
"The Future of Design – Designing the Future" – the international symposium "Imag(e)ining Futures", organised by the Faculty of Design at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS), explores visions of the future from two perspectives. Through panel discussions and workshops on 05 and 06 November at the THWS Sanderheinrichsleitenweg Campus in Würzburg, the event aims to explore the role of design in the development of visions of the future and to shed light on the future development of the discipline itself.
At the start of the first day, Professor Dr. Gerhard Schweppenhäuser will speak on the topic "Visions of Progress, Speculators and Backward-Looking Prophets" (in German), followed by the first panel featuring presentations on The Future of Images – Images of the Future. The second panel in the afternoon will address Sustainability and Futures Studies in Design, beginning with presentations, followed by panel discussions. This will be followed by the dinner keynote, featuring a conversation between Professor Erich Schöls and Dr. Jörg Vogel, followed by the opening of the exhibition showcasing students' work.
On Friday, 06 November, the day's programme begins with the third panel on Prototyping and Other Tools for Thinking About the Future, featuring a keynote presentation followed by workshops and a concluding discussion. In the afternoon, the fourth panel on Future Visions in Knowledge Transfer will begin with keynote presentations and a panel discussion involving the audience. Afterwards, Professor Dr. Ferdinand Ulrich will offer concluding remarks on the symposium, and the organising committee will bid farewell to the symposium's guests.
In addition to speakers from THWS and other German higher education institutions, researchers from Italy, the USA, and Greece will also be speaking; part of the programme will be held in English. The symposium is an initiative organised as part of the Research Cluster of the Association of Design Faculties of the Free State of Bavaria, D*BY.
The symposium is free of charge for THWS staff and all students; a day ticket for external guests costs 25 euros. Both days of the event will begin at 9 am. The venue is the THWS campus at Sanderheinrichsleitenweg 20, 97074 Würzburg.
The detailed programme and online registration can be found on the website of the THWS Faculty of Design.
