The best possible study experience with maximum flexibility: online degree programmes at THWS

Applications for online study courses open until 15 July – online information sessions during the application period

Studying online – this has been possible at the Technical University of Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) for a year now. With its three bachelor's degree programmes in Software Engineering, Health and Environmental Psychology, and Engineering Science, THWS aims to enable everyone to study who cannot undertake a traditional on-campus degree due to professional or family commitments. The application deadline for studying at the THWS Online Campus is 15 July.

If life doesn't fit into a rigid timetable, then a part-time degree programme could be exactly the right choice. THWS therefore offers flexible online degree programmes – these can be completed part-time within 13 semesters. Those who opt for the "Fast-Track" can study faster or virtually full-time, depending on their individual plans.

"With our online degree programmes, we offer a study model that adapts to the individual needs and life circumstances of our students," explains Professor Dr. Achim Förster, Vice President for Internationalisation and Teaching at THWS. "That way we open up opportunities for groups of students who find it difficult to complete traditional on-campus degree programmes due to work or other commitments. However, the THWS Fast-Track also allows students to study full-time – provided their personal circumstances permit it." THWS President Professor Dr. Jean Meyer, shares this view: "For years, we have seen a growing demand for flexible study options. This is precisely where our online degree programmes come in. They are the perfect choice, particularly for working people aiming for career progression."

Online bachelor's degree programme in Software Engineering

Christopher Engert is in his second semester of Software Engineering because he wanted to gain further qualifications after completing his apprenticeship as an electrician: "The 'official' route to becoming a master craftsman or technician in the electrical sector didn’t appeal to me – the online programme offers me the opportunity to expand my hardware skills through software. My part-time job, which involves 25 hours a week, goes really well with my online studies." What the 34-year-old particularly likes: "Even though I am studying online, I am enrolled at a higher education institution in the region and can thus also make use of benefits such as the semester ticket, the canteen, and the library. What's more, the lecturers are always available via e-mail to answer questions." His tip for future online students: "Stay on the ball right from the start, actively form study groups, and set aside fixed times for studying!"

Anyone interested in the online bachelor's degree programme in Software Engineering is welcome to join one of the upcoming online information sessions, which will take place on 3 June, 25 June, and 7 July, all at 7 pm (EST). Detailed information about the online programme, the application process, and the information sessions can be found here: https://online.thws.de/en/software-engineering/

Online bachelor's degree programme in Health and Environmental Psychology

Melissa Blümner has opted for the online Health and Environmental Psychology programme, which is designed as a 13-semester part-time course: "What I like most is the sense of community. Although it's an online programme, you don't lose the personal connection with your fellow students and lecturers. The weekly video calls are also very helpful for clarifying the course content and getting in touch with others." The 26-year-old also really likes the structure of the THWS online programme: "I'd assumed that the course would be run like some private universities, meaning you have to work 100 per cent independently. In fact, the THWS programme is much more structured. We receive a semester schedule with all the important dates and information. We also have a voluntary transfer task for each lesson to help us prepare for the exams. So you're not completely on your own."

Online bachelor's degree programme in Engineering Science

For the coming winter semester 2026/27, THWS is expanding the offered online programmes to include the bachelor's degree programme in Engineering Science. This interdisciplinary programme combines elements from the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and industrial engineering. The engineering fundamentals comprise modules in mathematics, physics, IT, and programming, as well as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and industrial engineering. This is followed by the specialisation phase with a specialisation in "Industrial and Systems Engineering"; further specialisations are in the planning stage. The internationally oriented programme is taught in English.

As with all degree programmes at THWS, practical orientation is a top priority in online teaching too – which is why each online degree programme includes an integrated internship semester to be completed in a company. Furthermore, exercises and practical projects form part of the online programme right from the start. Another special feature of the Engineering Science programme is that students who later decide they would prefer to study on-campus can flexibly transfer to one of the on-campus programmes at the Schweinfurt campus.
